Detail

The finding at Pyrgos of an Early Middle Bronze age installation to produce essential oils has been an important occasion for Institute per le Technologies Applicate ai Beni Cultural (ITABC-CNR: Sciences for knowledge, conservation and use of cultural heritage) to collaborate with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus in making known, outside the academic environment, an important aspect of Cypriot culture. The multidisciplinary approach that has characterized the research is testimony to the spirit of cooperation that has fueled the research itself, to reconstruct some elements of the ancient civilization of Cyprus, bringing out, strengthening, and consolidating the continuity of one of the oldest Cypriot traditions, without betraying its origins.

Cyprus is known for its rich history and natural beauty, and it has also become a hub for perfume production, often using local ingredients and traditional methods. While there are several small and artisanal perfume makers on the island, the larger factories might not be as prominent as in other countries.

Some notable points about the perfume scene in Cyprus include:

  1. Local Ingredients: Many perfumers in Cyprus utilize local flora, such as citrus fruits, herbs, and flowers, to create unique scents.
  2. Artisanal Producers: There are several small, family-run businesses that focus on creating handmade perfumes. These often emphasize quality and tradition.
  3. Perfume Workshops: Some places offer workshops where visitors can learn about the art of perfumery and create their own scents.
  4. Tourism: Perfume production can be tied to tourism, with shops in popular areas offering a variety of locally made fragrances.

Additionally, there are various smaller, artisanal perfumers throughout the island that craft unique fragrances, often inspired by Cypriot nature and culture.

What to Expect

In a unique prestige location in the footprints of Troodos mountains and a short distance from the sea right opposite the only copper mine in Cyprus lies the first and only theme park/museum about perfumery!

“The Perfume Park” was created by Italian scientists in collaboration with the Lazarus family from Cyprus and recreates an ancient complex where olive oil was produced, metallurgy was practiced, and essential oils and perfume compositions were created.

The visitor will have a unique experience to see the apparatus used for the first global distillation dating 4000 bc. Through the centuries the process of distillation has been involved. In the park, the visitor will have the chance to see this.

The area is also well known for its cultivation of aromatic, local herbs and the distillation of their essential oils.

ITALIAN archaeologists have found the world’s oldest perfumes on Cyprus. The perfumes were scented with extracts of lavender, bay, rosemary, pine or coriander and kept in tiny translucent alabaster bottles. The remaining traces found at Pyrgos, in the south of the island, are more than 4000 years old
